New York’s Migrant Protection!
New York is home to a large immigrant community!
New York, May 29 (EFE).-
New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed on Friday a package of laws aimed at protecting the migrant community and curbing the flagrant abuse of power by ICE in the state.

The legislation will restrict ICE agents’ operations in sensitive locations, including schools, churches, courthouses, and community centers, unless they have a warrant.
Hochul stated on Friday at an event with religious leaders, Make the Road NY activists, and immigrant families affected by detentions and deportations that they would not allow ICE’s abuse of power to continue on the streets and communities.

The new legislation also establishes a total ban on law enforcement officers in the state using masks or balaclavas.
Hochul denounced ICE agents for covering their faces without technical justification, unlike other federal agencies, such as the FBI or the DEA. She said they do so with the sole aim of intimidating and threatening the public.

The legislative package will also end 287(g) agreements, which allowed local police departments to perform immigration functions.
The governor emphasized that she wanted police officers to focus on local crimes, not on doing ICE’s civil enforcement work.

The law is being signed amid growing tension between New York State and the policies of the US President Donald Trump administration. The governor described the administration’s migration policies as “cruel.” EFE
