Two goals by Kylian Mbappé, in the 66th and 96th minutes, and one by Bradley Barcola, in the 82nd, gave the French national team a victory against Senegal this Tuesday, in the debut of both teams in the 2026 World Cup at MetLife Stadium (3-1).

In the 94th minute, Ibrahim Mbaye scored Senegal’s only goal. Following its victory, France will face Iraq in Philadelphia next Monday, June 22, and will conclude its participation in Group I on Friday, June 26, against Norway at the Boston venue.

Iraq vs. Norway
In Boston, Erling Haaland’s two goals in his World Cup debut propelled Norway to a 1-4 victory over Iraq in Boston, Massachusetts marking the Nordic team’s return to a World Cup 28 years later, since France 1998.

Haaland scored in the 29th and 43rd minutes, while his teammate Leo Ostigard scored in the 76th minute. In an unexpected turn of events, Iraqi player Aymen Hussein scored a goal in the 39th minute and an own goal in the 6th minute of stoppage time.

The three points put Norway on par with France at the top of World Cup Group I, which is considered the ‘group of death.’
Iraq was the last of the 48 teams to qualify for this World Cup and had not been part of a World Cup since Mexico 1986.

Mbappé Breaks a New Record
French forward Kylian Mbappé became France’s all-time top scorer this Tuesday after scoring two goals against Senegal in the match that closed the first matchday of World Cup Group I.

In total, Mbappé now has 58 goals for France in 99 matches, surpassing Olivier Giroud, who scored a total of 57 in the 137 matches he played for Les Bleus.

Mbappé reached 14 goals in World Cups, surpassing Pelé’s 12 and the 13 scored by Leo Messi and the Frenchman Just Fontaine. He remains tied with Gerd Müller, one goal behind the 15 scored by Brazilian Ronaldo Nazário and two behind the 16 scored by Germany’s Miroslav Klose, the tournament’s all-time top scorer. EFE
