The Abortion Pill by Mail OK by Supreme Court Ruling!

Washington, May 14 (EFE).-
The United States Supreme Court ruled on Thursday to allow the mail-order delivery of Mifepristone, a drug used to terminate pregnancies, without requiring an in-person doctor’s visit, keeping in suspension a lower court’s order that sought to restrict the drug’s availability.

The decision by the highest US court is subject to appeal and temporarily overturns the New Orleans Court of Appeals ruling that reinstated the requirement for patients to pick up Mifepristone in person.
The court did not provide a written justification for its decision, which was supported by seven justices and opposed by two conservative judges, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito Jr.

Mifepristone, when used with misoprostol, is the most common method for early pregnancy termination in the US.
Accessing it by mail has become a key pathway for abortion, especially for women in territories with strong restrictions on the procedure, since the Supreme Court repealed federal protections in 2022, leaving its regulation in the hands of each state.

Abortion rights advocates described the Apr. 30 decision by a Louisiana court as the greatest threat to access to abortion since the Supreme Court revoked the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling four years ago.
The highest US court had postponed the imposition of the state appeals court’s determination, and Thursday’s ruling extends that postponement indefinitely.

However, the state of Louisiana, which argued that mail-order delivery of Mifepristone should not be allowed in states that prohibit or restrict abortion, still has grounds for appeal. EFE asb/dgp
