Jakarta, indonesia Aug 19 (EFE).-

A Peruvian woman was arrested in Bali after landing at the Indonesian tourist island’s international airport carrying 1,432.87 grams of cocaine, a crime punishable by death, authorities reported Tuesday.

Police said in a statement that the 42-year-old, identified only with the initials NS, was arrested on the night of Aug. 12 when she attempted to enter Bali with the drugs hidden inside her genitals and her underwear, at the end of a trip that began in Spain the previous day and included a brief stop in Qatar.

“After conducting an inspection, customs officers became suspicious” of the accused, so they requested a more thorough investigation from the Anti-Narcotics Unit, whose officers discovered the drugs through X-ray images.Inside the detainee was a sex toy containing 194 grams of cocaine, while the rest of the drugs were found inside her underwear.”Eighty-five orange ecstasy pills were also found inside her bra,” the statement added.

According to the investigation, the case began to unfold in April through a dark web chat, in which a man coordinated with the woman to receive the drugs in the Spanish city of Barcelona with the promise of a reward of US$20,000 if she successfully smuggled them to a recipient in Bali.

The police are tracking down the person who delivered the drugs in Spain, as well as the network that was to receive the woman in Bali.

At the end of July, the Indonesian court sentenced a 46-year-old Argentinian woman to seven years in prison for attempting to smuggle cocaine concealed in her body into Bali.

The same day, three British citizens received one-year prison sentences after police found narcotics in their suitcases.

In recent months, Indonesia, a country that imposes the death penalty for drug trafficking, has approved repatriations of foreigners convicted of crimes involving illicit substances, in an unusual show of clemency for those convicted of drug trafficking.

According to Amnesty International’s latest report on death sentences and executions, dating from 2024, the Indonesian courts issued 64 new death sentences for drug-related offenses in the year prior to the report’s publication. EFE sh-hp/tw
