Lagos, Nigeria, Dec. 29 (EFE) –

English boxer Anthony Joshua was injured Monday in a traffic accident that left two people dead in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria, road safety authorities told EFE.

”Joshua was injured today in an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan highway. Two people died in the accident,” Afolabi Odunsi, spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, told EFE.

The accident occurred when the SUV in which he was traveling collided with a parked truck in the Makun area, although Odunsi assured that the boxer “is safe.”

Witnesses to the accident told local newspaper The Punch that Joshua was traveling as a passenger in a Lexus, accompanied by another person in the back seat.

The driver and a passenger were killed when they crashed into a parked vehicle; the boxer’s security team was traveling behind.

Joshua, 36, has been in Nigeria since his fight with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on December 19, which Joshua won by knockout in the sixth round.

The heavyweight returned to the ring after a 15-month break and is expected to fight his old rival, Tyson Fury, next year.

Joshua is the son of British Nigerian parents. He lived in Nigeria until the age of 12, when he moved to the United Kingdom.

Although he excelled at athletics and football, the fighter took up boxing at the age of 18.

Four years later, he turned professional after winning gold at the 2012 Olympics in the UK in the over 91-kilogram category.

Since then, Joshua has had a professional career spanning 32 fights, with 29 victories, 26 knockouts, and three by points. He has been defeated only four times, two by knockout and two on points. EFE
