Two dead at Mexican prison!
Mexico City, Oct 9 (EFE).-
Two inmates died Friday as a result of a fight at El Castillo prison in Mazatlán, Sinaloa (northwestern Mexico), bringing the death toll to 12 in less than 24 hours due to violent incidents at that prison, according to the state’s Public Safety Secretariat.

Sinaloa security authorities said that the prison administration reported the altercation and added that prison officials brought the situation under control to ensure the safety of other inmates, as well as operational and administrative staff.
The State Attorney General’s Office was notified of the events so it can launch the corresponding investigations, while efforts will be made to contact the families of the deceased.
This incident follows another brawl at the same prison on Thursday, in which at least 10 people, nine inmates and a visiting minor, died, and 16 inmates) were injured.

The brawl prompted a large deployment of federal forces in the area, according to local authorities.
After the first riot, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said the Federal Security Cabinet is working with the Sinaloa state government to strengthen the state’s prison system and to investigate what sparked the brawl.
These fights are amid a prolonged crisis of violence that has plagued the state of Sinaloa since Sep. 2024, linked to the dispute between Los Chapitos and Los Mayos factions of the Sinaloa Cartel that have been at odds since the arrest in the United States of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.

Although the dispute began in Culiacán, it has spread to municipalities in the southern part of the state, such as Mazatlán, where authorities have reported homicides, disappearances, armed attacks, and seizures of weapons and explosives.
The violence has persisted despite successive operations and the deployment of additional federal troops to the region. EFE
