US Secretary of State Marco Rubio attempted on Monday in New Delhi to address concerns caused in India by racist and anti-Indian comments from the United States, including an offensive post shared by Donald Trump, by asserting that the US president “loves India.”

“The president loves India (…) I wouldn’t be here if the president didn’t want me to be here,” Rubio told reporters on the last day of a four-day official visit aimed at strengthening the strategic relationship between Washington and New Delhi.

The controversy arose a month after Trump reposted on Truth Social a post by commentator Michael Savage that described India, China and other countries as “hellholes”, a derogatory term equivalent to “cesspools”, in an essay against birthright citizenship in the US.

The comment sparked a wave of outrage in the country and even reached the government of India, whose foreign ministry criticized the post, calling it “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste.”

During a press conference on Sunday, a local reporter asked Rubio about several racist comments from the US against the Indian community, something he said went against the basic premise of the relationship between both countries.

“I’m sure there are people that have made comments online and other places because every country in the world has stupid people. I’m sure there’s stupid people here. There’s stupid people in the United States that make dumb comments all the time,” he replied.

The next day, a US press journalist traveling with Rubio reminded him that part of the controversy did not come from anonymous accounts but from a post that Trump had shared on Truth Social. Rubio avoided addressing the content of that post and again attributed the attacks to unrepresentative voices.

“I don’t know who he was talking about but I figured, I assumed that he’s talking about people posting stuff online…Some of these could be a troll or could be a bot,” he said. EFE lgm/pd
