France launches M51-nuclear capable missile!
Paris, Oct 6 (EFE).-
France on Tuesday conducted the first test launch of a new generation M51 nuclear-capable ballistic missile from a submarine off the coast of Finisterre, in western France, which was witnessed aboard a frigate by French President Emmanuel Macron, his office reported.

The missile, launched without a nuclear warhead from the nuclear-powered submarine Le Vigilant, was fired as part of Operation SMERTRIOS to test the submarine’s ability to deploy it after its maintenance and repair period, the ministry of the armed forces said in a statement.
The missile was tracked throughout its flight by the General Directorate of Armament, including those of the instrumentation and tracking vessel Monge.

The missile fell in the North Atlantic, several hundred kilometers from any coast, the ministry added, noting that the test was carried out without a nuclear warhead and in compliance with France’s international commitments.

The M51.3 is the third version of the M51 strategic sea-to-land ballistic missile and entered operational service on Oct. 24, 2025, according to the ministry.

The ministry said that the new version offers greater range, accuracy, and capacity to overcome missile defenses, and is intended to maintain the deterrence capability of the French nuclear submarine fleet in the face of evolving defenses of potential adversaries.
“This success confirms Le Vigilant’s ability to deploy this missile, whose capabilities ensure the continued credibility of the French nuclear deterrent. This launch is further proof of France’s technological excellence and its industry’s commitment to nuclear deterrence,” it added.

The M51 constitutes France’s sea-based deterrent component, which Paris considers essential to guarantee its long-term deterrent capability. EFE
