Mexico City, Jun 17 (EFE).-
The Colombian national team defeated World Cup debutants Uzbekistan 1-3 on Wednesday at the Mexico City Stadium to take first place in Group K of the 2026 World Cup.

Daniel Muñoz, Luis Diaz and Jaminton Campaz scored for the Colombians, while Abbosbek Fayzullaev found the net for the Uzbeks.

Colombia dominated play but took the lead only after 40 minutes, when Diaz gave an assist to Muñoz who made it 0-1 with a close range shot.

The second half continued with the Colombians dominant from midfield forward, with the Uzbeks waiting for any opportunity to counterattack.

In the 60th minute, when Colombia seemed to have control of the match, an error from goalkeeper Camilo Vargas allowed Fayzullaev to equalize 1-1.

It did not take long for the South Americans to bounce back as Gustavo Puerta and Diaz came together, with the latter beating Uzbek goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov to make it 1-2.
The closing moments were tense. Colombia gave the ball away and Uzbekistan created danger by taking advantage of the spaces left by the South Americans.

In the 90+9th minute, Campaz made the most of a pass from ‘Cucho’ Juan Camilo Hernandez and made it 1-3, sealing the outcome of the match.

The victory takes Colombia to the top of Group K with three points, two ahead of Portugal and Democratic Republic of Congo – who earlier played out a draw between them -, and three ahead of Uzbekistan.

On Jun.23, Colombia will face DR Congo in Guadalajara, while Uzbekistan will be up against Portugal in Houston. EFE
