The French forward won the spot kick after being brought down by Juan Cruz inside the box.

He converted calmly, sending goalkeeper Sergio Herrera the wrong way. “It was important to start with a win. We need to keep improving,” Mbappé said after the match.

Shots from Dean Huijsen and Éder Militão were stopped by Herrera, while Vinícius Junior tested the defense with his runs.

Mbappé had earlier missed two opportunities, including a header and a left-footed strike.

Osasuna defended with five at the back and waited for counterattacks.

Their best chance came in the final minutes when striker Ante Budimir headed over from close range. “We had our opportunity but couldn’t take it,” Budimir said.

Coach Xabi Alonso praised his team’s defensive work in his league debut. “We controlled the game well. There are things to improve, but the attitude was good,” he told reporters. seo/mcd
