Washington, Apr 13 (EFE).-

President Donald Trump said on Monday that he believes his administration can focus on Cuba once the war against Iran is settled, as Washington assures that it maintains contacts with Havana while the island continues to suffer the US oil blockade.

“Cuba’s a failing nation, and we’re going to do this, and we may stop by Cuba after we’re finished with this (referring to the war against Iran),” Trump told reporters during an event at the White House.

The New York magnate was responding to a question about Washington’s recent decision to allow some oil tankers to reach the island, which requires about 60,000 barrels of imported crude daily to satisfy its energy needs.

The Trump administration announced at the end of March that it would analyze each oil shipment case by case after allowing the Russian vessel Anatoly Kolodkin to deliver 100,000 tons of crude to Cuba amid the severe energy crisis the island is experiencing, which has deepened with the oil siege imposed by Washington since the US captured and overthrew former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January.

“It has been very oppressive, as you know, and we have a lot of great Cuban-Americans, all of whom just about voted for me. And they were treated very badly. In many cases, family members have been killed. They’ve been beaten up and mugged. And, like, terrible things happened in Cuba,” Trump added about the island.

He also asserted that the country “has been horribly run for many years by (Fidel) Castro.”

Since the American oil strangulation began, Trump has insisted several times that the government of Miguel Diaz-Canel is on the verge of collapse and has gone so far as to suggest that the US could carry out a “friendly takeover” of Cuba. EFE
