Former US President Barack Obama took another jab at President Donald Trump on Wednesday, claiming that Trump had “mobilized” his entire administration to respond to a joke he made about renovations at the White House instead of addressing voter concerns.

During a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, ahead of next Tuesday’s midterm elections, Obama poked fun at the anger he triggered in Trump last Saturday when he joked that the president’s White House renovations had it “looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory,” a popular restaurant chain known for its ornate, over-the-top interior design.

“The president wasn’t even mad about the Saddam Hussein comparison,” he said. “That part didn’t bother him, but he was very upset about the Cheesecake Factory. He took great umbrage.” The former president added that Trump had even “mobilized” his entire administration to counter the joke, a reference to the fact that on Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had lunch at one of the chain’s restaurants and spoke to the press to respond to the comments.

The Democrat also criticized Trump for choosing to respond to his remark about the White House decor rather than addressing the criticisms leveled by Democrats during this campaign regarding his economic management and high inflation, which they attribute to the war against Iran.

“They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke, not to inflation, but to that joke,” Obama reiterated.

On Monday, Trump lashed out at his predecessor, calling him a “stupid person” for the remarks and arguing that they proved why Obama had been a “lousy president.”

The president brought the subject up again on Wednesday during a rally in Ohio, where he once more defended the renovations made to the presidential residence.

Obama took part in a campaign rally in the pivotal state of Georgia to support the reelection of Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, a seat the party hopes to retain, as well as Keisha Lance Bottoms’ candidacy for governor. EFE
