The Prosecutor General’s Office of Morelos, Mexico, returned the body of the Spanish student Claudia Tacoronte to her family on Friday. Tacoronte was stabbed on Sep. 12 in the municipality of Cuautla, one day after the alleged perpetrator, known as “El Trompas,” was arrested.

Also present were representatives of the Executive Commission for Victim Assistance (CEAV), as well as Morelos Attorney General Fernando Blumenkron Escobar and Secretary of the Interior Edgar Maldonado.

“We have formally handed over Claudia’s body to her father, Mr. Valentín. We explained the procedure and the necessary identification so that he could take her body with him. That is how the proceedings unfolded,” Blumenkron told the media.

The receipt of the body for repatriation took place one day after Francisco Javier, also known as “El Trompas,” was arrested. He has been identified as the alleged perpetrator of the femicide.

The man was arrested in Cuautla, the scene of the crime, located 120 kilometers (74 miles) south of Mexico City, when federal and state authorities executed an arrest warrant for him.

On Thursday night, El Trompas was transferred to the Cuautla State Social Reintegration Center (Cereso), where he is still in custody.

The Morelos Prosecutor General’s Office has announced that it will charge the suspect with femicide and seek the maximum sentence of 70 years in prison.

Tacoronte, a 21-year-old woman from the Canary Islands, was stabbed to death. She had arrived in Mexico in mid-August to participate in an academic exchange program between the University of Granada and the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM).

Her murder sparked outrage inside and outside of Mexico when it was revealed that she is the fourth UAEM student to be murdered in seven months. Previous cases include Kimberly Ramos, Karol Toledo, and Michelle Itzayana Fuentes. These murders have already led to protests and student rallies. EFE tr-afs/dgp/mcd
