IACHR stands for Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
Mexico City, Mar 30 (EFE).-
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday that the country will bring the situation of Mexicans in United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
Following the latest death on Friday, Sheinbaum read a statement from the Mexican Foreign Ministry outlining the actions they will take, including filing a virtual hearing with the IACHR regarding the deaths of individuals in ICE detention centers.
During her morning press conference, she also said the government will send letters to US authorities to complain about the “deficient medical care” at the Adelanto facility in California, where the deceased was being held.
Additionally, Mexican officials will meet in Los Angeles with the victim’s family and human rights advocates.
”Today, the Undersecretary for North America (Roberto Velasco) will address the issue with the US Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald D. Johnson,” the president added.
Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, Washington has tightened its immigration policy, detaining over 177,000 Mexicans, 14 of whom have died while in the custody of ICE agents.
Of the 14 deaths, five have occurred in California, three in Georgia, two in Arizona, one in Texas, one in Florida, one in Missouri, and another in an unspecified state. EFE
