A brace by France’s Kylian Mbappé in the 48th and 66th minutes made him the provisional top scorer of the 2026 World Cup with 10 goals and the all-time World Cup leading scorer with 22, surpassing Argentina’s Lionel Messi, but it wasn’t enough for the French to secure third place as they fell 4-6 to England in Miami.

The English team prevailed with goals by Declan Rice in the 3rd minute, Ezri Konsa in the 18th, a hat trick by Bukayo Saka in the 37th, 45th, and 87th minutes (the latter on a penalty kick), and a last goal by Jude Bellingham in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

The other goals for Didier Deschamps’ team were scored by Bradley Barcola in the 54th minute and Ousmane Dembélé in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Another notable aspect of this match was that the first of Saka’s two goals against the French marked the 300th goal in the competition’s history.

The 23rd edition of the World Cup began on June 11 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City and will conclude Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey with the final between Spain and Argentina. EFElaa/mcd(photo)
