Colombia’s earthquake left at least 111 people dead!
Bogotá, Aug 10 (EFE).-
The Colombian Army deployed around 180 rescue workers to search for people trapped under the rubble of buildings damaged by Monday’s 7.4-magnitude earthquake in central and western Colombia.
The earthquake has already left at least 111 people dead, according to the government’s latest tally.
“180 soldiers, divided into five platoons of 36 members each, will be deployed from military bases in Bogotá and Tolemaida to priority areas based on damage reports and the requirements of authorities and relief agencies,” the Army stated in a press release.
Three platoons are heading to Colombia’s coffee-growing region, one of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake.
Another platoon is going to Chocó, the epicenter of the quake in the Pacific region, and the remaining one is going to Cali, the capital of Valle del Cauca, which has recorded at least 15 deaths and 380 injuries.
The rescue teams are equipped with drones, thermal cameras, motion sensors, tripods, stretchers, first-aid kits, and tools for clearing debris.
The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported that a magnitude 7.4 earthquake took place at 7:34 am local time. The epicenter was located in the municipality of San José del Palmar in the Chocó region, at a depth of 103 kilometers (64 miles).
The earthquake caused damage across much of the central and western parts of the country.
According to Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella in his first public statement following the earthquake in Bogotá, the damage report stands at 111 dead, 87 injured, 1,575 damaged homes, 37 destroyed homes, and 61 collapsed buildings.EFE
