International Desk, Dec 30 (EFE).- By Alicia Garcia de Francisco
After family-oriented releases dominated movie theaters in 2025, next year is expected to shape up as a major year for blockbuster cinema, with the return of superheroes, long-awaited sequels and new films from some of the industry’s most acclaimed directors.

Marvel will unveil new installments of Avengers, Spider-Man and Supergirl, while filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, Greta Gerwig, Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu are set to release new projects. Sequels to franchises including Dune, Toy Story and The Devil Wears Prada are also among the year’s most anticipated releases.

One of the standout titles is Nolan’s The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. Shot entirely with IMAX cameras, the film premieres on Jul. 17.
Fan interest has surged around The Devil Wears Prada 2, scheduled for Apr. 30 release. Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep return, joined by Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci and new cast members Sydney Sweeney and Kenneth Branagh.

Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday remains largely under wraps, though its cast includes Robert Downey Jr. in the role of a villain, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Florence Pugh and Chris Evans, returning after retiring as Captain America in Endgame.
The Mandalorian and Grogu brings the popular Star Wars series to theaters in May, with Pedro Pascal reprising his role and new appearances by Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White.

Emerald Fennell directs a new adaptation of Wuthering Heights, starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, set for February. Denis Villeneuve continues his saga with Dune: Part Three, arriving late in the year.
Almodovar’s Bitter Christmas stars Leonardo Sbaraglia and Barbara Lennie. Spielberg’s science fiction film Disclosure Day opens in June, while Iñárritu’s Digger, starring Tom Cruise, arrives in October.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland reprises his role as the teen superhero after No Way Home (2021) earned $1.91 billion at the global box office.
Other major releases include Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, Toy Story 5, Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, the Michael Jackson biopic Michael and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock, which explores the darker origins of Kara Zor-El before her arrival on Earth.
Together, the slate signals a renewed focus on large-scale storytelling in 2026. EFE
