Venezuela breaks with Peru!

Caracas, Jul 30 (EFE).-

Venezuela broke diplomatic relations with Peru on Tuesday after Lima failed to recognize the re-election of current President Nicolas Maduro and claimed opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia was the winner.

“The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has decided to break diplomatic relations with the Republic of Peru, on the basis of Article 45 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961,” Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil wrote on his X account.

He said they were “forced” to make this decision after the “reckless” statements of his Peruvian counterpart Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea, who, he said “ignored the will of the Venezuelan people” and the constitution, which thousands of Venezuelans and a large part of the international community rejected.

The break comes after Peru recognized Gonzalez Urrutia as the president-elect of Venezuela after Sunday’s elections, where the electoral council gave the victory to Maduro.

“This position is shared by numerous countries, governments and international organizations,” Gonzalez-Olaechea said.

Asked how they view Maduro, he said that, “after the fraud perpetrated” in Sunday’s elections, Peru considers him “as a person who wishes to perpetuate himself in power through a dictatorship.”

The foreign minister said he sent “a communication to the telephone” of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, expressing his solidarity with her and with Gonzalez Urrutia.

The commission announced Maduro won by just over 704,114 votes against Gonzalez Urrutia, the candidate of the majority opposition coalition, when 20 percent of votes were still pending, translating into 2,394,268 votes, whose destination is unknown and which could significantly change the final results.

The main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform, claimed Gonzalez Urrutia won the presidency by a wide margin and created a website where it uploaded 73 percent of electoral records, already consulted by millions of voters, to reinforce its claim. EFE
