The United States and Colombia conducted a joint operation on Monday, intercepting a submarine that was transporting nearly 10 tons of cocaine. The operation resulted in the arrest of the four individuals operating the vessel, according to the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
“With INL support, Colombian security forces executed a joint operation to target this narco-sub,” the INL wrote on X. “10 tons of cocaine worth $441M are now destroyed & 4 narco-traffickers arrested. Strong partnerships deliver strong results,” it added.
Authorities arrested four suspected drug traffickers who were operating the submarine during the operation, which took place in international waters. The exact location was not specified.
The action occurred one week after Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s official visit to his US counterpart, President Donald Trump, at the White House, in an effort to mend the bilateral relationship following recent diplomatic tensions.
Since Aug. 2025, the US has conducted a series of lethal attacks against vessels allegedly linked to drug trafficking in the Pacific and Caribbean, as part of Operation Southern Spear.
Unlike previous operations, which have resulted in over 115 deaths, the crew members in this joint action were apprehended to face judicial proceedings. EFE
