England defeated Mexico 3-2 in Mexico City on Sunday and will next meet Norway after it knocked Brazil out of the tournament 2-1 to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in history.

In the 36th minute at Azteca Stadium, England’s Bukayo Saka burst down the right flank and delivered a perfect cross to Jude Bellingham, who headed home the opening goal, ending Mexico’s streak of 396 consecutive World Cup clean sheets.

The Mexicans had barely settled into the game when Harry Kane won possession and set up Bellingham for the second goal just two minutes later.

Amid chants of “Yes we can!”, Mexico pushed forward and Julián Quiñones scored in the 42nd minute after pouncing on a rebound in the box and firing past Pickford with his right foot to make it 2-1, turning the stadium into a cauldron of noise.
After the break, England were reduced to 10 men in the 54th minute when Jarrell Quansah was sent off for a hard tackle on Jesús Gallardo.

The Mexicans went in search of an equalizer, but in an English counter-attack, Rangel brought down Gordon in the area, and Kane made it 3-1 by converting the penalty.

The game intensified and at a crucial moment, Bellingham committed a foul in the area, and Jiménez brought Mexico closer by converting the penalty to make it 2-3.
Mexico maintained its pressure, but England held firm and powered into the quarterfinals, where they will face Norway on Saturday in Miami.

Norway earlier stunned Brazil with a 2-1 win at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, advancing to a World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in history thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland in the final 11 minutes.

While Neymar scored for Brazil 10 minutes into added time, it was too little, too late for the South Americans and made their earliest exit from the tournament since 1990.

“I couldn’t quite believe it because I didn’t dream of this ever in my life,” Haaland, 25, said after the match. “I dreamed of playing in the World Cup with Norway and taking them to the World Cup, but I never expected to win against Brazil, let’s be honest. I thought it was not possible to do some things, but I guess I’m wrong.”

“It’s difficult to find words for what I’m feeling, what I’m doing, because it is unreal. I need to pinch myself in the arm because it’s big,” he said. EFE
