Jorge Messi, father of Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi, died early Saturday at the age of 68 in Rosario, in Argentina’s Santa Fe province, according to the health center where he had been admitted.
“Sanatorio Centro, through its medical director, has the painful duty to report the passing of patient Jorge Messi, 68 years of age, which occurred on this date, at 02:00 AM (05:00 GMT),” the health clinic said in a statement signed by Dr. Carlos Mackey.
The statement further expressed “our most sincere condolences” to Messi’s family and loved ones, but added that “in compliance with current regulations on patient data protection, and out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further details will be provided regarding the medical circumstances of the death.”
Jorge Messi, born in 1958 in the Argentine province of Santa Fe, was instrumental in his son Lionel’s career, serving as his agent and the administrator of the family’s assets.
The Liga Profesional de Fútbol, Argentina’s top professional soccer league under the Argentine Football Association, bid farewell to Jorge Messi with a photo of him on social media alongside his son.
The Newell’s Old Boys club of Rosario, where Messi began his career, published a farewell message on social media: “He was the support and the person who bolstered the career of the greatest player of all time with vision, rigor, and affection, along with his wife, Celia Cuccittini.”
During the 2026 World Cup, Jorge Messi’s health status caused concern and some Argentine media outlets had reported his death, but the family released a statement, underlining that Jorge was going through a “health situation” and was under medical supervision. EFE
