Karol G brought her voice to St. Peter’s Square!

Karol G brought her voice to St. Peter’s Square on Saturday in an unusual concert in the Vatican that also lit up the Roman sky with drones.
The Colombian artist sang alongside Andrea Bocelli, Pharrell Williams, John Legend, and other stars, which closed the third edition of the World Meeting on Human Fraternity, held in Rome the previous day.
The concert had the imposing St. Peter’s Basilica as a backdrop for the thousands of people who packed the Vatican Square.
A drone show lit up the sky with various Catholic motifs, including the hands of God and Adam in Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, and the face of the late Pope Francis.
For a night, St. Peter’s Square became an extraordinary open-air stage, filled with pop, rap, sacred themes, gospel, and even Latin rhythms courtesy of ‘La Bichota’.
Karol G and Bocelli
Karol G, who, according to sources close to her, enjoyed her performance at the Vatican, appeared before the audience dressed in an elegant black dress with rhinestones and kicked off with her song “Mientras me curo el cora” from her album “Mañana será bonito” (2023).
She later returned to the stage to thrill the audience alongside tenor Bocelli with the classic “Vivo por ella.”
The audience showed their affection with flags, T-shirts, and symbols not only from her country, but also from other Latin American countries, as many had come specifically to see the Colombian star.
“It’s a nice event, but we actually came to see Karol G,” Liz from Peru told EFE, celebrating that she participated “on behalf of Latin America.”
Many others came to hear Bocelli, who was not only responsible for opening the concert with his “Ave Maria,” appropriate for such a sacred place, but also for organizing it alongside streaming companies such as Disney+ and Hulu, which broadcast it.
“We came for him,” said a Colombian attendee named Jair, although he admitted that his 18-year-old son preferred Karol G.
Gospel, rap, and demands
Another guest of honor at the mega-concert was American Pharrell Williams, who got the crowd dancing and applauding with his famous “Happy.”
Earlier, the artist urged attendees to turn on their cell phone flashlights, illuminating the entire square, and said it was “an opportunity to come together.”
Williams also introduced John Legend, who thrilled the crowd by singing “Glory” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water’ at the piano.”
Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo, who sang “La vida es un carnaval” by late Cuban legend Celia Cruz at the Vatican Square, and Jennifer Hudson, who sang “The Prayer” alongside Bocelli.
After her performance, the thousands of people in the square stood up to celebrate in advance the birthday of Pope Leo XIV, who turns 70 on Sunday.
However, as expected, the American pontiff did not attend the concert, disappointing many who hoped to see him.
On his behalf, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, archpriest of the Vatican basilica, opened the concert reiterating his “no to war” and his “yes to peace and brotherhood.”
It was not all music and dancing as the Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi, 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner, and Mozambican Graça Machel, widow of Nelson Mandela, also spoke among Bernini’s colonnade. EFE
