Gloria Steinmen dies at 92!

Gloria Steinem, the writer, journalist and pioneering feminist activist who became one of the most influential voices of the women’s movement in the United States, died at her home in New York at the age of 92.
“Yesterday, Gloria Steinem passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her,” a statement posted on her Instagram account said on Thursday.
“Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end.”
It described her “greatest gift” as her ability to listen to others and make them feel “seen and heard.”
Steinem was born Mar. 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio. Frequent moves by her family meant she did not attend school regularly until she was 11. She later studied government at Smith College.
After college, Steinem worked as director of the Independent Research Service, an organization funded by the CIA, before turning to freelance journalism. She wrote for publications including Esquire and covered issues affecting women.
In the 1960s, she went undercover as a Playboy Club “bunny” in New York to report on the working conditions faced by women employed there.
Steinem joined the founding staff of New York Magazine in 1968. Her reporting on abortion helped shape her advocacy for what she called reproductive freedom — the right to choose whether to have children.
She helped found the National Women’s Political Caucus alongside feminists including Bella Abzug and Betty Friedan. In the 1970s, she co-founded Ms. magazine with Dorothy Pitman Hughes, helping create a major platform for feminist writing and political debate.
Steinem, who survived breast cancer in the 1980s, received Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities in 2021.
“She spent her recent years doing the two things she loved most: being in community with others and writing,” the Instagram statement said. EFE
