The World Cup matchday saw two dominant offensive performances. France clinched the top spot in Group I after defeating Norway 4-1 in Foxborough, while Senegal reignited their campaign with a historic 5-0 rout of Iraq in Toronto.

In the United States, France took advantage of Norway resting their star, Erling Haaland. Ousmane Dembélé delivered a memorable performance, scoring a hat-trick in just 32 minutes and dismantling the Scandinavian defense. Thelo Aasgaard scored a consolation goal for the Norwegians, and Désiré Doué rounded out the scoring for France in stoppage time.

Norway missed a golden opportunity to narrow the gap in the second half when Jorgen Strand Larsen missed a penalty. Following the 4-1 final result, France advances to the Round of 32 in New York as group leaders, while Norway will face Ivory Coast.

Meanwhile, Senegal roared back to life with a crushing 5-0 victory over Iraq, boosting their chances of qualifying as one of the best third-place teams. The Africans took control of the match early with goals from Abdoulaye Seck and Habib Diarra, alongside the red card issued to Iraq’s Rebin Sulaka, a decision that was later overturned by VAR.

In the second half, Ismaïla Sarr, Iliman Ndiaye, and a brace from Pape Gueye sealed the African triumph. With this lopsided result, Senegal made history by becoming the first team from their continent to score five or more goals in a World Cup match. EFE jcr-at/dmv
