Paris, Aug 14 (EFE).-

French customs officers have seized 243 kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated 16 million euros on the illicit market from a Dutch truck traveling from Spain, the customs service said Friday.

The operation took place last weekend on the A-10 motorway near Orléans, in central France, after officers received a tip about the possible transportation of illicit substances, Customs said in a statement.
During a thorough inspection of the cargo, officers found 200 packages of cocaine hidden among bales of straw and arrested the driver, who is also a Dutch national.

The driver said he was traveling between Spain and the Netherlands and requested additional time to prepare his defense. His appearance before a court was therefore scheduled for Oct. 12.
The French customs service said it seized 31.26 tons of cocaine last year. EFE
