Court approves ICE’s “Racial Prolifing”

The United States Supreme Court put on hold a ruling by a federal judge in Los Angeles that restricted federal agents from making immigration stops based on “racial profiling,” a decision that sparked criticism from the opposition.
“We should not have to live in a country where the government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low-wage job,” warned Judge Sonia Sotomayor in her dissenting opinion after the court decided by a 5-4 vote to reactivate immigration raids in California.
The raids had been suspended on July 11 by Judge Mamee E. Frimpong, who deemed it unconstitutional to detain individuals based solely on their race, language, location, or employment status.
The initial operations sparked major protests in Los Angeles, with clashes between demonstrators and local police.
Alert over racial profiling
After the Supreme Court ruling, California Governor Gavin Newsom said the decision threatens Latino communities and innocent families.
Newsom also criticized the Supreme Court on X, saying, “Donald Trump’s hand-picked SCOTUS majority just became the Grand Marshal for a parade of racial terror in LA.
Newsom has a history of clashes with Trump, including the federal deployment of the National Guard in California, lawsuits, and an escalation of mutual media attacks.
In June, Newsom accused the former president of militarizing the streets and cracking down on migrants, further establishing himself as one of Trump’s leading Democratic critics.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass supported the governor, saying the ruling “opens the door to profiling and undermines the rights of immigrant communities.”
Civil rights organizations such as the ACLU and Human Rights Watch also denounced the Supreme Court’s decision, saying it normalizes racial profiling and exposes millions of immigrants to detention without due process.
They also warned that ICE raids undermine trust in institutions and create a climate of fear in the most vulnerable neighborhoods. EFE
