Brussels, Oct 2 (EFE).-

The European Commission will present its 2026–2030 strategy for LGBT+ people next week, aimed at empowering the community and addressing ongoing challenges, spokesperson Eva Hrncirova said Thursday.

The plan, covering lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary, intersex and queer people, will apply across all EU member states and seeks to strengthen the bloc’s “Union of Equality,” Hrncirova told reporters at the Commission’s daily briefing.

The strategy is expected to include a ban on so-called conversion practices—interventions designed to change, repress or suppress sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression—following guidance agreed by EU governments earlier this year.

The EU’s first LGBT+ strategy, launched for 2020–2025, aimed to mainstream equality across all policy areas and amplify the voices of sexual and gender minorities. It also sought to bring together governments and stakeholders at all levels to more effectively combat discrimination against LGBT+ people.

A Commission review published in 2023 found that while progress had been made, with more EU countries adopting national action plans, hate speech and anti-LGBT+ rhetoric have increased in recent years.

The new strategy will continue to focus on combating discrimination and violence, mainstreaming equality in all policy areas and protecting vulnerable groups.

The Commission first addressed the issue in 2015 with its List of Actions to Advance LGBTI Equality, the bloc’s first policy framework targeting discrimination against the community. EFE
