Madrid, Jan 29 (EFE).-

Spain will begin its bid for a second World Cup title at the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico by establishing its base camp in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Thursday.

After conducting an in-depth analysis of several potential venues, the RFEF, in coordination with head coach Luis de la Fuente and his technical staff, selected Chattanooga as Spain’s headquarters for the opening phase of the competition.

The city lies less than two hours by bus from Atlanta, where Spain will play its first two matches, against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.

Spain will be based in Chattanooga and will travel to Atlanta on June 14, the day before their tournament debut, and again on June 20, on the eve of their second group-stage match.

Their longest journey will come for the third and final group game, against Uruguay, which will take place on June 27 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Chattanooga, located in Hamilton County along the Tennessee River and at the foot of the iconic Lookout Mountain, has a population of around 190,000.

The Spanish squad will stay at the Embassy Suites by Hilton, a luxury hotel located nearly 6 km from their training base at Baylor School.

The high-performance sports facilities are used regularly by Atlanta United of Major League Soccer and were also home to Auckland City FC of New Zealand during last summer’s Club World Cup.

“This is an important opportunity for Baylor and for the Chattanooga community,” said Chris Angel, director of Baylor School.

“We feel honoured and excited to have been selected. Hosting Spain places our school on the world stage and reflects the quality of our campus, facilities and infrastructure for elite athletic performance.”

The RFEF said it will assess future base camps for the later stages of the World Cup depending on Spain’s results and their progress in the tournament. EFE
