Madrid-born singer and composer Alejandro Sanz has been awarded the ‘Escobón de Oro 2025’ prize, which will be presented by the Jarandilla de la Vera Town Council (Cáceres) as part of a new edition of the ‘Los Escobazos’ festival, declared of National Tourist Interest.

The announcement was made by the municipality’s mayor, Fermín Encabo, during the presentation of the official poster and promotional video for ‘Los Escobazos’ 2025, a festival held every December 7 in this town in the La Vera region.

Encabo emphasized that Alejandro Sanz, who owns a property in the municipality of Jarandilla, is deserving of this distinction “in recognition of his support, involvement, and dissemination of the traditions and cultural values of Jarandilla de la Vera.”

The official poster is the work of photographer Carlos Mugo, who won the competition to select the festival’s poster.

The selected photograph reflects “the richness of our cultural roots, the tradition that has been passed down over the years, and the feelings evoked by this imposing fire festival in honor of the Immaculate Conception,” the City Council explained.

“Los Escobazos,” one of Extremadura’s festive events, was declared a festival of National Tourist Interest last year.

Every day before the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, this event brings together thousands of visitors who are greeted with burning brooms as a symbol of joy and treated to wine by the locals.

The main elements of this festival are the brooms, made by hand from gorse; the bonfires (some reaching 16 meters in height); the music; the fervor of the people; and the blue banner of the Immaculate Conception carried by the steward.
