King Charles III formally withdraws the title of Prince from his brother Andrew

King Charles III of the United Kingdom withdrew the title of Prince, along with other distinctions, from his brother, Andrew, who has fallen from grace due to his past ties with the late American paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein, and his questionable business activities.
On Thursday, Buckingham Palace announced the publication of the Letters Patent the previous day in the royal newspaper, The Gazette, which confirms the measure announced by the monarch on Oct. 30.
“THE KING has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated Nov. 3, 2025, to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince,'” the entry in the public register stated.
Another entry confirmed his exclusion from the Register of the Nobility as Duke of York, as had been anticipated.
“His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him. Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse,” the text reads.
Last week, Buckingham Palace indicated that the second son of the late Queen Elizabeth II would be known by his name and would remain away from public life. He retired from public life in 2019 after an interview in which he justified his relationship with Epstein.
During an appearance on the BBC’s “Newsnight” program, he denied knowing Virginia Giuffre, who has accused him of sexually abusing her on three occasions when she was a minor, and of posing for a photograph with her.
The publication on Oct. 21 of the memoirs, “Nobody’s Girl,” by the young woman who committed suicide in April, increased pressure on Andrew and the King, who responded by announcing the withdrawal of his brother’s remaining honours.
Last week, the palace also confirmed that Andrew must vacate the Royal Lodge mansion in Windsor, southwest of London, where he has lived rent-free since 2004, despite initially investing a million pounds in renovations in 2005.
In light of these controversies, several MPs (Members of Parliament) have requested legislation that would empower the British Parliament to revoke royal titles, regardless of the monarchy’s wishes.
Republic, an association that campaigns to replace the parliamentary monarchy with a republic, is currently raising funds to initiate a private prosecution against Andrew. He avoided a civil trial in the Giuffre case by reaching an out-of-court settlement with her in 2022.
