International Desk, Apr 3 (EFE).-

Iran shot down a US fighter jet over its territory, US officials told American media on Friday, marking the first such incident since the start of the conflict between Washington, Israel and Tehran.

The exact location where the aircraft went down remains unclear, although reports from outlets such as The Washington Post suggest the incident occurred in southern Iran.

A search and rescue mission is underway to locate the two crew members believed to have been on board.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to EFE’s request for comment.

If confirmed, this would be the fourth F-15 involved in an incident since the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to escalate attacks across the region.

The previous three aircraft were damaged in a friendly-fire incident in Kuwait at the start of hostilities, although all crew members were rescued.

The downing of the aircraft over Iranian territory marks a new phase in Operation Epic Fury, the name given by the Donald Trump administration to the joint campaign against Tehran, and comes two days after the president vowed to strike the country “hard” over the next two to three weeks.

Trump addressed the nation on Wednesday but, rather than signaling an end to the conflict, offered no specific details on how the reportedly final weeks of the war would unfold or on the possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. EFE
