Catherine, the Princess of Wales, has been diagnosed with cancer and has already begun a “preventive chemotherapy” treatment, she confirmed on Friday.

In a video message, the wife of the heir to the British Crown, William, said “it has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family” since the diagnosis, and thanked people for the “wonderful messages of support” she had received and the “fantastic medical team” that has been treating her.

“In January I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful, however tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy,” the Princess of Wales explained.

The announcement, which comes after her husband’s father King Charles III also revealed in February that he is suffering from an unspecified form of cancer, follows two months of speculation and rumors about the 42-year-old’s health.

“I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal in my mind, body and spirits,” she said.

Kensington Palace – the official residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales – said they would not disclose further details about the nature of her cancer or the length of her treatment and emphasized Catherine’s “right to medical privacy”.

“We hope that you’ll understand that as a family we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment,” Catherine said, adding that she must “focus on making a full recovery.”

The princess concluded her message by saying that she was also thinking of those “whose lives have been affected” by cancer.

“For everyone facing this disease in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone,” she said EFE
