British singer Morrissey canceled two US shows on his world tour on Friday after he received a “credible threat” on his life.

The 66-year-old former Smiths frontman was due to perform at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, on Friday night and at MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston on Saturday, but the events have been canned.

“In recent days, there has been a credible threat on Morrissey’s life,” said a statement on his social media profiles.

“Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and audience, tonights engagement at Foxwoods has been canceled. We appreciate your understanding.”

Soon after, a second post said that “due to recent events and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and band,” the upcoming shows were canceled and refunds would be issued.

Earlier this week, a 26-year-old man in Ottawa was arrested for allegedly threatening to kill the musician at CityFolk music festival via a post on social media, according to the Ottawa Citizen.

According to the outlet, the Sep. 4 post read: “Steven Patrick Morrissey when you perform at TD Place here in Ottawa next week on the evening of September 12th, 2025 at about 9pm, I will be present at the venue in the audience and I will attempt to shoot you many times and kill you with a very large gun that I own illegally.”

The concert went ahead, and the man was later released on bail, it said.

The social media cancellation posts did not specify the details of the threats, nor what “recent events” they referred to.

Morrissey’s next scheduled show is at the Met Philadelphia on Tuesday. After the US he heads to Mexico on his way to South America.

The Smiths formed in Manchester in 1982, and catapulted to stardom with hits such as “There is a Light That Never Goes Out” and “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want.” The band broke up in 1987 after guitarist Johnny Marr left, reportedly due to creative differences with Morrissey. EFE
