Berlin, Aug 16 (EFE).-

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday backed US President Donald Trump’s proposal to hold a trilateral summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and announced he will travel to Washington on Monday to discuss the details with Trump.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy described his “long and substantive” one-hour conversation with Trump earlier in the day, followed by a 30-minute video call that included several European leaders.

“Ukraine reaffirms its readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace. President Trump informed about his meeting with the Russian leader and the main points of their discussion,” Zelenskyy said.

“It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation.”

Zelenskyy, who has repeatedly requested direct talks with Putin in recent months, expressed support for Trump’s idea of a three-way summit between the US, Ukraine, and Russia.

“We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia,” he wrote.

“Ukraine emphasizes that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this.”

The Ukrainian leader said “I will meet with President Trump in Washington” on Monday to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. “I am grateful for the invitation.”

Zelenskyy underlined the importance of European leaders being involved “at every stage” of the process to ensure Ukraine receives reliable security guarantees alongside US support.

“We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security. We continue to coordinate our positions with all partners. I thank everyone who is helping,” he added.

The anticipated Trump-Putin meeting on Friday in Alaska ended without a ceasefire agreement, though both leaders described the talks as constructive, with Trump calling them “extremely productive.” EFE cph-sk
