Pope Leo XIV urged institutions and civil society to create “valid employment opportunities” that offer “stability and dignity,” especially to young people, during an audience this Saturday in St. Peter’s Square on the occasion of the Jubilee for the World of Work.
“I hope for a collective commitment, on the part of institutions and civil society, to create valid employment opportunities that offer stability and dignity, ensuring above all that young people have the possibility of realizing their dreams and contributing to the common good,” the pontiff said during his greeting to the Italian faithful gathered in the Vatican.

“Dear friends, work must be a source of hope and life, allowing individuals to express their creativity and their capacity to do good,” Leo XIV added before thousands of faithful gathered in the square.
Before the audience, the American pontiff, who also holds Peruvian citizenship, toured the square in the popemobile, stopping to greet children and the faithful.

The Jubilee for the World of Work coincides with the shock in Italy over the death last Monday of a worker trapped for eleven hours under the rubble after the partial collapse of a medieval tower in the center of Rome, an event that has reignited the debate on workplace safety, a constant theme in union demands.
The celebration, which brought together nearly 10,000 pilgrims, had originally been scheduled for May 1-4, 2025, but was postponed due to the death of Pope Francis.
