Over $36 million stolen in a cyber attack on South Korea’s largest crypto platform
Seoul, (EFE).
South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency platform Upbit suffered a massive cyber attack on Thursday in which 54 billion won (over $36 million) were stolen, its operator announced.

“A portion of Solana-affiliated assets worth approximately 54 billion won was confirmed to have been transferred to an unauthorized wallet address at 4.42 am (7.42pm GMT Wednesday),” Dunamu CEO Oh Kyung-seok said in a statement.
“Upbit immediately suspended deposit/withdrawal services and conducted a comprehensive inspection, prioritizing the protection of member assets,” he explained.

“We have immediately and internally identified the extent of the loss resulting from the abnormal withdrawal. To prevent any damage to member assets, the entire amount will be covered by Upbit’s holdings. We would like to reiterate that this will not affect member assets,” he added.
Dunamu apologized for the inconvenience caused to its users and said that they have implemented a series of measures in this regard.

The measures include the transfer of all assets to a cold wallet to avoid future abnormal transfers, an attempt at a chain freeze, the necessary preparations to cooperate with the relevant investigating authorities, and a complete verification of the security of deposits and withdrawals.

The CEO said they were conducting a thorough review of the stability and security of the entire digital asset deposit and withdrawal system, not just the Solana network, and that deposit and withdrawal services would resume as soon as security is guaranteed.

The Upbit operator said the platform prioritizes its assets and would do everything possible to provide a more secure service based on a reinforced security system.
