Jéssica Bouzas defeats Venus Williams!
Washington, Aug 7 (EFE).-
Spaniard Jéssica Bouzas defeated American Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday in her debut at the Cincinnati Masters 1000.
The 22-year-old Galician, currently world No. 51, arrived in Cincinnati after reaching her first career WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Canada.

The Cincinnati draw resulted in a first-round clash with 45-year-old star Williams, winner of seven majors, who unexpectedly returned to the tour this summer.
“It wasn’t easy at all. She’s a legend. It’s a privilege to play against her. For me, it’s like a dream. I never thought I can play against Venus Williams, but here I am so I’m just lucky,” Bouzas said after the match.

“I tried to have a lot of intensity, but I had no rhythm. She hits so hard. I tried to focus. I had to be positive to win the points.”
Williams earned her first victory in nearly two years at the Washington Open, having last won in 2023 in Cincinnati.

“I had so much fun out there, and there were definitely moments where I had a lot of chances,” Williams said. “I thought she played super well. I have to definitely give her a lot of credit.”
Bouzas will now face Canadian Leylah Fernández, world No. 24, winner of the Washington Open two weeks ago. EFE at/tw
