Amid applause, lights, and an atmosphere of restrained disappointment, Republican Jack Ciattarelli conceded defeat Tuesday to Democrat Mikie Sherrill, who became the first democratic woman to win the governorship of New Jersey.

“Although we were not successful tonight, that doesn’t mean we weren’t successful on the issues that really matter,” the Republican said.

“I am more passionate than ever about solving the problems facing New Jersey: lowering taxes, keeping our communities safe, and fixing what isn’t working. Let’s continue doing everything we can to improve this situation,” Ciattarelli added to applause and shouts of “Thank you.”

The final results confirmed the Democratic victory with a larger margin than predicted by the polls. Republican supporters said they had not expected such a large difference between the two candidates.

At the Bridgewater Marriott, where Ciattarelli had convened his Election Night Victory Party , dozens of supporters began arriving from 5 pm. However, the doors to the main hall did not open until 8 pm.

The hall, decorated with American flags and red, white, and blue lights, slowly emptied after the speech. Many attendees expressed concern about the state’s political future, though they praised the Republican’s campaign efforts.

“We are sad about the result, but Jack represented us with dignity and courage,” said a supporter as she left the hotel.

This was Ciattarelli’s third defeat in his bid for governor, after losing a Republican primary back in 2017 and narrowly to Democrat Phil Murphy in 2021. However, the politician affirmed his continued commitment to New Jersey and pledged to champion the issues he considers priorities for its citizens.

“I’m not afraid for the future of New Jersey, but I do believe we must continue working together to improve it,” he concluded before leaving the stage.
