Lima, Jun 17 (EFE).-
Right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori on Wednesday widened her lead over leftist rival Roberto Sánchez to 39,115 votes after 99.383% of ballots were counted in Peru’s presidential runoff held June 7.

With that share tallied, the leader of the Fuerza Popular party had 50.107%, or 9,157,631 votes, compared with 49.893% for Sanchez of Juntos por el Perú, who totaled 9,118,516 votes.

The Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales said 572 polling-station tally sheets with observations or challenges remain to be reviewed by special electoral juries, out of 92,766 tally sheets issued nationwide.

At the special juries, the sheets are reviewed to resolve complaints filed by the competing political groups. If disputes persist, the cases are sent to a public recount.

Local media also reported Wednesday that the Jurado Nacional de Elecciones agreed to consider a request from Juntos por el Perú to annul results from 647 polling stations set up in three U.S. cities.

Although the JNE has not yet set a date to review the case, the decision followed a ruling by the Lima Centro 2 special electoral jury declaring admissible an appeal filed by the leftist party.

Sanchez met for several hours Wednesday at party headquarters with leaders, candidates and legal advisers. He later told reporters he would hold a news conference Thursday morning because he has “very important announcements to make to Peru in this context of a struggle for electoral justice.”

The JNE said proclamation of the runoff results will occur no later than mid-July, less than two weeks before the change of government and the start of Peru’s next term (2026–2031). EFE
