With just 18 days remaining until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Brazil and Germany continue to share one of the tournament’s most remarkable records: 18 consecutive World Cup matches with at least one goal scored, a milestone that will remain out of reach even at next year’s expanded tournament.
The scale of the achievement becomes clear when compared with Argentina national football team, the reigning world champions, who currently hold the longest active scoring streak in the competition with nine consecutive World Cup matches finding the net.

Argentina scored in its final two matches at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and in all seven games during its victorious campaign at Qatar 2022. Even if the Albiceleste score in all eight possible matches at the 2026 tournament in North America, an unprecedented maximum due to the expanded format, their streak would only reach 17 games.
That means the record jointly held by Brazil national football team and Germany national football team will remain intact at least until the 2030 World Cup.

Brazil’s run began in its very first World Cup match at 1930 FIFA World Cup and continued uninterrupted through 1954 FIFA World Cup. The streak finally ended during the group stage of 1958 FIFA World Cup with a goalless draw against England.
Germany achieved the same feat twice across different eras, underlining the team’s long-standing consistency in front of goal.
Its first 18-match scoring streak stretched from 1934 FIFA World Cup to its opening match at 1962 FIFA World Cup, when goalkeeper Lorenzo Buffon helped Italy secure a 0-0 draw.

The Germans repeated the feat between 1986 FIFA World Cup and 1998 FIFA World Cup. That streak ended unexpectedly in the quarter-finals of the 1998 tournament when Croatia stunned Germany with a 3-0 victory.
The players behind the goals
Just as teams have built historic scoring runs, several individual players have also left their mark on the World Cup.
Just Fontaine at Sweden 1958 and Jairzinho at Mexico 1970 remain the only players to score in every match of a single World Cup campaign, each finding the net in all six games they played.

A group of players follows closely behind with goals in five consecutive World Cup matches, including Gerd Müller, Eusébio, Leônidas, Teófilo Cubillas, James Rodríguez, Rivaldo, and Hristo Stoichkov.
With the possibility of playing up to eight matches in 2026, the records of Fontaine and Jairzinho are mathematically vulnerable.

Among the leading contenders to challenge them is Lionel Messi, who heads into the next World Cup on a four-match scoring streak after netting against Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia, and France during Qatar 2022.
Other stars such as Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé will also attempt to match the consistency of these legendary scorers while helping their nations chase the enduring record shared by Brazil and Germany. EFE jdm-sk
