China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi hailed the world’s increasing multipolarity and economic globalization at a “turbulent” time, during the meeting of foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

At the event on Tuesday in the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin, Wang called for “further consensus” among the organization’s members as “protectionism is surging, and regional conflicts are emerging one after another,” according to a statement released Wednesday by the Chinese foreign ministry.
The diplomat warned his counterparts of a “complex and severe” security situation as “new threats and challenges emerge one after another.”

Wang condemned Israel’s recent attacks against Iran, which he described as an infringement of the sovereignty and security of Iran, a member of the SCO.
He also advocated for “good neighborliness” among the SCO member countries, which includes both India and Pakistan, which exchanged airstrikes in May that left dozens dead.
“The SCO should take the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations as an opportunity to firmly safeguard the authority and role of the United Nations, advocate an equal and orderly world multipolarization, and inclusive economic globalization, promote the common values of all mankind, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of member states, and promote the construction of a more just and reasonable global governance system,” he added.

The foreign minister of China, which holds the rotating presidency of the SCO, known as the ‘Asian NATO,’ also reported that the organization will hold its 2025 summit between Aug. 31 and Sep. 1.

Within the framework of Tuesday’s foreign ministers’ meeting, President Xi Jinping received the organization’s foreign ministers in Beijing to urge them to improve response mechanisms to global security threats and challenges.

“We must unite and lead the global south to promote the establishment of a more just and reasonable global governance system and gather tremendous strength to build a community with a shared future for mankind,” China’s leader said.
The SCO, made up of Belarus, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, is the world’s largest institution in terms of geographic reach and population, covering approximately 40 percent of the world’s population.

Although its members maintain that it is not a military bloc and that it seeks to protect its member states from threats such as terrorism, separatism and extremism, some experts believe that its main objective is to serve as an opposition to NATO. EFE aa/tw
