David Beckham, former player for Manchester United and Real Madrid, among others, and for the English national team, was knighted by King Charles III on Tuesday for his services to football and British society.

The 50-year-old former footballer was nominated to the King’s Honours list last Christmas and was knighted, meaning he will wear the title ‘Sir,’ in a ceremony held Tuesday in Berkshire, England.

“I couldn’t be more proud of that. People know how patriotic I am and how much I love my country. I’ve always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I’ve been very fortunate throughout my life to travel around the world and everyone wanted to ask me about our monarchy. That makes me very proud,” said Beckham.

A product of Manchester United’s youth academy, Beckham spent eleven years with the club before moving to Real Madrid in 2003 after winning several Premier League titles and a Champions League. He couldn’t replicate his Manchester United success with Real Madrid, winning only one Spanish league title in his four years there, but he left a significant impact on the Spanish capital before moving to LA Galaxy.

During his time in Los Angeles, Beckham had two loan spells at AC Milan and one at Paris Saint-Germain before retiring in 2013 and becoming the owner of an MLS franchise, the current Inter Miami, which boasts players like Leo Messi and Luis Suárez.

Internationally, Beckham played 115 matches for England, captaining the team for six years and participating in two World Cups and two European Championships.

Off the pitch, in addition to his modeling career, Beckham is known for his charitable work, serving as a UNICEF ambassador since 2005.
