Spain’s first knockout win at Women’s Euro Cup!
Lausanne, Switzerland, July 19 (EFE).—
Spain’s women’s team continues to make history, advancing past the knockout stage of the UEFA Women’s Euro, thanks to a hard-fought 2-0 victory over hosts Switzerland.

The Spanish national team achieved the historic milestone by reaching the Eurocup semifinals for the first time in its fifth appearance at the tournament.
With this result, Spain matches its best-ever performance in the competition, 28 years after it first reached the semifinals in the 1997 edition of the Euro held in Norway and Sweden.

Back then, only eight teams competed, and Spain advanced directly from the group stage to the semifinals.
In that 1997 campaign, Spain finished second in its group after drawing with France (1-1), losing to Sweden (0-1), and defeating Russia (1-0).

The team was then eliminated by Italy (2-1) in the semifinals, with Italy going on to lose the final to Germany.
Since the introduction of the expanded format in 2009, initially with 12 teams and currently with 16, Spain had never advanced beyond the quarterfinals.

In the 2013 (Sweden), 2017 (Netherlands), and 2022 (England) editions, Spain made it out of the group stage as runners-up but fell at the first knockout hurdle each time.

This year, however, Spain is on a record-breaking run. For the first time in its history, the team topped its group with a perfect record and matched the best-ever group-stage scoring tally (14 goals), equaling England’s feat from the previous edition.

Now, they’ve added another first: winning a knockout-round match.

Spain will face the winner of the France vs. Germany clash in the semifinals on July 23 in Zurich. Both teams, current World Cup and Nations League champions, will be battling for a chance to reach their first-ever Women’s Euro final. EFE plm-sk
