Spain beats Italy; Belgium sends Portugal home!

Bern, Switzerland, July 11 (EFE). –

Spain beat Italy 3-1 on Friday, sending both teams to the knockout stages of the Women’s Euros. Spain topped Group B, setting up a match with hosts Switzerland, while Italy will meet Group A winners Norway.

Italy worked the ball in from the left flank, and Martina Piemonte found enough space to squeeze off a shot.

Spain’s Mariona Caldentey tried to control it but only succeeded in setting up Oliviero, who slammed the ball home.

Spain responded four minutes later when the reigning world and Nations League champions began to dominate possession. Athenea del Castillo worked the ball in from the right before playing a brilliant one-two with Alexia Putellas in a tight space and firing into the net.

Guijarro put Spain up 2-1 in the fourth minute of the second half, and Esther Gonzalez sealed the deal for Spain with a stoppage-time goal, making it 3-1.

Meanwhile, Belgium secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Portugal, sending them home.

Belgium got off to a dream start when Wullaert scored in the third minute.

Telma Encarnação scored an equalizer in the 87 minute, giving the Portuguese team some hope, but Cayman sealed Belgium’s victory in the 96 minute when she pounced on a loose ball and fired it into the net. EFE
