Vatican City, Feb 24 (EFE).-

Pope Francis had a good night and is resting, the Vatican press office reported Monday, after it was reported over the weekend that he remains in critical condition in hospital in Rome and that some blood tests show mild initial kidney failure, currently under control.

“The night has gone well. The pope has slept and is resting,” the brief statement from the Vatican press office said.

In the medical report for Sunday afternoon, it was reported that the Argentine pontiff, at Gemelli Hospital since Feb. 14 with bilateral pneumonia, had not had any more respiratory crises like the one he suffered Saturday, but that they continued to supply him with oxygen through nasal cannulas.

They said that Saturday he was given two units of concentrated red blood cells that increased the hemoglobin value.

And that thrombocytopenia, that is, the low level of platelets that was detected on Saturday, “remained stable,” the sources said.

However, with respect to the previous medical reports, it was reported that “some blood tests show an initial mild renal insufficiency, currently under control.”

Although the condition is “critical,” the pope remains alert and well oriented, the medical report added.

“The complexity of the clinical picture and the wait necessary for the pharmacological therapies to give some response force the prognosis to remain reserved,” the sources added.

This afternoon’s medical report will provide more information. EFE
