New York City, May 27 (EFE).-

President Donald Trump on Tuesday offered Canada free protection under his Golden Dome defense system if it becomes the country’s 51st state, or else it would cost Ottawa billions.

“I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Gold Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “They are considering the offer!”

Trump’s statements come after Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said that his country is suffering from the dangers of economic and security overdependence on the US and that he plans to increase its integration with the European defense industry.

In an interview with CBC, Carney emphasized that “seventy-five cents of every dollar of capital spending for defence goes to the United States. That’s not smart.”

He therefore anticipated that his government will diversify spending and direct more toward its European partners. In response to Trump’s annexation ambitions, criticizing his use of “economic force,” Carney invited Britain’s King Charles III to attend the opening of the country’s 45th legislative session, focused on asserting Canada’s sovereignty. In parliament the king delivered the Speech from the Throne, last given by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977.

Last week, Trump estimated that the Golden Dome, presented as a more advanced version of Israel’s Iron Dome, will cost approximately $175 billion and projected its completion by the end of his term in 2029.

The president later asserted that Canada wants to be part of the system and was willing to include the country, but that Ottawa would have to “pay their fair share.”

The Canadian government confirmed it was in talks with the US government as one of “several” options. EFE nqs/tw
