New York City, Jan 31 (EFE).-

US President Donald Trump on Friday celebrated Venezuela’s release of six American prisoners following a meeting between a US special envoy and President Nicolas Maduro.

The six US citizens were returning home on Friday on a plane with Ric Grenell, Trump’s envoy for special missions.

“Just been informed that we are bringing six hostages home from Venezuela. Thank you to Ric Grenell and my entire staff. Great job!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.

Grenell posted a photo on X with the men, writing “we are wheels up and headed home with these 6 American citizens.”

The Americans were not named by either side.

Grenell had met with Maduro, who was recently sworn in for a third six-year term despite credible evidence he lost the election. Washington and other governments do not recognize his claim of victory.

Through a statement, the Caracas administration said that, during the meeting at the Miraflores presidential palace, Maduro “proposed the construction” of a “zero agenda for a new beginning in bilateral relations,” broken since 2019.

However, Washington – which reiterated Friday that it does not recognize Maduro as president – assures that Grenell’s mission in Venezuela had the objective of getting Caracas to accept deportation flights of its citizens from the US, and obtaining the release of American citizens detained in Venezuelan prisons.

In parallel, Trump assured Friday that he will not allow the purchase of oil from Venezuela as did his predecessor, Joe Biden, who eased the sanctions scheme with the issuance of licenses to foreign companies, including the American Chevron, to operate in the Caribbean country, which has the largest proven crude oil reserves.
