“Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead,” Biden said from the Oval Office of the White House.

The outgoing president confessed to having “great concern” about what he called a “dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a few ultra-rich individuals.”

Biden said Americans “must hold the social platforms accountable to protect our children, our families and our very democracy from the abuse of power.”

Biden, 81, said goodbye with this speech after serving a single term in the White House that will go down in history encapsulated between the two periods of Donald Trump, whom he did not mention Wednesday, but to whom he alluded in several points.

The octogenarian said “the concentration of power and weather” discourage people from participating in the democratic process, adding that it undermines the sense of unity and common purpose.

Biden also took stock of his management in the last four years.

“It will take time to feel the full impact of what we’ve done together. But the seeds are planted, and they’ll grow and they’ll bloom for decades to come,” he said.

Biden cited job creation, the ceasefire agreement for Gaza, strengthening NATO and catching up in competition with China among others.

The president, who will hand over power Monday to Trump, called on Americans to “be guardians” and “keep faith” in the country.

“To you, the American people, after 50 years of public service, I give you my word. I still believe in the idea for which this nation stands. A nation where the strength of our institutions and the character of our people matter and must endure,” he said.

May you all be the keeper of the flame. May you keep the faith. I love America. You love it too. God bless you all. And may God protect our troops. Thank you for this great honor,” he said. EFE at/lds
