Moscow/Miami, Jan 10 (EFE).-

The Kremlin said Friday that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is ready to meet incoming United States President Donald Trump without conditions.

The Kremlin’s comments come after the Republican said his team was setting up a meeting with Putin to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine.

“No conditions are required for this. What is required is a mutual desire and political will to conduct a dialogue and resolve existing problems through dialogue,” said Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov in his daily telephone press conference.

“We see that mister Trump also declares his readiness to resolve problems through dialogue, we welcome this.”

He said Putin has repeatedly expressed his willingness to maintain contacts with international leaders including Trump.

At the same time, he admitted that “there are still no specifics… we proceed from the mutual readiness for such meetings.”

“Apparently, there will be some movements in this direction after Trump enters the Oval Cabinet [in the White House],” he added.

On Thursday, Trump said his team was preparing a meeting with Putin.

“He wants to meet, and we are setting it up,” Trump said in an address before the cameras at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, after meeting with Republican governors.

“President Putin wants to meet. He has said that even publicly and we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess.”

The president-elect has promised to end the war in Ukraine when he takes power on Jan. 20 and added that he would achieve a ceasefire and bring Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the negotiating table.

Democrats have criticized Trump in the past for showing sympathy for Putin and not having done enough to disassociate himself from and investigate the work of some of his collaborators with Russia to interfere and affect the results of the 2016 elections, in which he beat Hillary Clinton.

Regarding the Russian position with a view to future peace negotiations, Peskov stressed that they remain unchanged, referring, among other things, to the annexation of four Ukrainian regions and the refusal to allow Ukraine to join NATO.

For his part, Zelenskyy has also shown himself willing to hold negotiations with Trump as soon as possible to address security guarantees for his country, after which he aims to meet with Putin to stop the war that next month will mark three years. EFE
