Mexico City, May 14 (EFE).-

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday questioned the United States government for “negotiating” with alleged Mexican drug trafficker Ovidio Guzmán to allow his family to enter the US, while the country refuses to talk to terrorists and has designated certain Mexican cartels as such.

The Mexican president said in her daily press conference that the US President Donald Trump’s administration must first explain why it has allowed 17 family members of Ovidio Guzmán, son of Sinaloa cartel leader El Chapo Guzmán, who is imprisoned in the US, to enter that country.

“If they (the US) have a policy of not negotiating with terrorists, they decide, as a decision of their own, to designate some organized crime organizations as terrorists. So they should inform whether there is an agreement or not,” Sheinbaum said.

The Mexican leader stressed that the government should “explain to the people of the US, if they reach an agreement, how they are doing it.”

“And to Mexico, of course. First of all, they are Mexicans, and secondly, one of their relatives has been extradited,” she added.

Sheinbaum was referring to the “negotiations” between the said drug trafficker and the US, confirmed on Tuesday by Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch, who said that 17 members of Guzmán’s family, including his mother, had voluntarily surrendered to US authorities at the Tijuana border on May 9.

“What information is out there and how they explain it. They need to provide information,” Sheinbaum insisted.

In addition, the Mexican president stressed the importance of the recent constitutional reform to guarantee Mexico’s sovereignty in the face of US pressure to intervene in Mexico under the “pretext” that drug cartels are terrorists.

She stressed the importance of not using the issue of organized crime as an “argument” when there are clear rules in the bilateral relationship, highlighting “respect for sovereignty” and coordination.

On Monday, Mexican media reported the extradition to the US authorities of 17 relatives of Ovidio Guzmán (known as “El Ratón,” linked to the “Los Chapitos” faction of the Sinaloa cartel and imprisoned in Chicago), including his mother, Griselda López Pérez, who is also accused of drug trafficking.

This follows the extradition of Ovidio Guzmán in September 2023 and the surrender of his brother Joaquín Guzmán López in July 2024, both of whom face drug trafficking charges and are negotiating plea deals. EFE mjc/dgp
